Finding Joy in the Small Things

In life, it is seldom that we can be happy all the time. It isn't our natural state, although it is something we all constantly desire. We can learn to be happier in life if we celebrate the small things in life that are good as much as the big things!

Gratitude

One of the best ways that we can learn to find joy in the little things in life is by starting a gratitude practice, and working on cultivating a gratitude mindset. There are many benefits to practicing gratitude in your daily life.

It can be as simple as making a daily gratitude list of 3-5 things that you are grateful for, either first thing in the morning or right before you go to bed. This helps to focus your mind on gratitude, instead of ruminating about things that may be going wrong.

No matter how bad our current situation may be, it is important to remember that it is temporary. Things will get better. And, it is likely that there is still some good in your life. Even if you can only think of a small thing to be grateful for, it will help you to feel better about your day.

Mindfulness

Another way that we can feel happier in our daily life is by practicing mindfulness. This allows us to be focused and centered in the present moment. The more present we are with what is happening in the current moment, the less we are likely to worry about the future, or think of regrets from the past.

By focusing on our current circumstances, and taking them as they come with acceptance, grace and peace, we can learn to be more centered within ourselves.

It isn't always easy to be mindful throughout the day, but if you take a few minutes to practice mindfulness, especially if you are feeling stressed, it can help you feel at ease in your body again.

Spend time with children or pets

When you spend time immersed in the time you spend with your children or your pets, it can bring a simple joy to your heart. Children live very much in the moment, and spending time with them and listening to them can help you take on a new perspective about life.

Animals also have a soothing effect on your soul. They are friends that are always there for you, for a cuddle or a game of fetch. Spending time with your pet can help you to find a sense of joy as well.

According to News in Health,

Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost your mood.

If you have a mental health condition, you may also qualify to have an emotional support animal. This is something that you can talk to your doctor or therapist about, if you think that it may be helpful for you.

According to Mental Health America,

In order to get the benefits of an ESA, you will need a “prescription” from a mental health professional. This is basically just a signed letter stating that you have a mental health condition and that your pet helps you deal with it. Some landlords and airlines will accept a letter from a medical doctor, but often it needs to be a therapist or a psychiatrist.

If you are unable to get your own pet at the present time, you can also volunteer at a local animal rescue. In addition to being good for your mental health, you will also know that you are doing some good for animals that are in need.

Spend time in nature

Spending time in nature is another great way to find joy in the simple things in life. You can go for a daily walk in a natural setting, or you can simply spend a few minutes sitting on your front porch or at your window.

If you work in an office, it is also a great idea to let in some natural light, if possible. Having sunlight in your space can help to boost your mood throughout the day, and help you to be able to enjoy your workspace more. Some offices also allow you to have a plant in your workspace, which can help as well.

Sunlight, plants and water are all beneficial for your mental health. When you spend time outdoors, you can appreciate the natural beauty, and immerse yourself in it. You may see birds or small animals playing, which is a great way to relax too, when you watch them for a few minutes.

Even if you don't have time every day to spend some time outside, you can make a special point to go somewhere in the outdoors on the weekend. You can go to a local park, or go for a hike in a wild area. This allows you to soak in the natural landscape, and unplug from technology.

Conclusion

Every day there are small things that we can do to help ourselves find a sense of joy and wonder in the world. The more of these activities that we can incorporate into our daily routine, the better! You don't have to take a lot of time, either.

Spending a few minutes each day appreciating the beauty of life that is all around you can help you find a sense of peace and joy in life, and create a more positive mindset.

The more joy you can find in small things all around you, the happier your life will be in the long run!
