November 13, 2023 is World Kindness Day

Every year, we celebrate World Kindness Day on November 13. This is a day that can inspire us to practice random acts of kindness towards everyone in our lives. Kindness helps to make the world a better place for everyone, and this day is a beautiful way to hilight that.

According to Save the Children,

World Kindness Day will be celebrated around the world on November 13, 2023.
First introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, World Kindness Day  offers an opportunity to highlight good deeds in the community and the common thread of kindness.

The more people share kindness all over the world, the more of a beautiful and peaceful world we can help to create for everyone. From small things like smiling at a stranger or holding open a door, to bigger acts like promoting world peace or donating money to charity, we can all make an impact every day in the lives of others.

Kindness builds connections and brings people together. The more kind we are, the more we grow into the best versions of ourselves.

Intuitively, we know the value of kindness in our daily lives. When we are kind to others and offer them our service, we make an impact in the mental wellbeing of the people that we come in contact with. By helping others and showing kindness, we can improve our own mental wellbeing as well.

According to Everyday Health, the benefits of kindness are:

1. Kindness Is an Antidote to Stress

2. Kindness Can Help With Anxiety and Depression

3. Kindness May Improve Heart Health

4. Kindness May Help With Diabetes Management

5. Kindness Can Help People With Cancer Feel Supported

6. Kindness Promotes Happiness

7. Kindness May Help You Live Longer

This means, the more we can spread kindness throughout the world, the more we are creating a better place for everyone. We are both improving the lives of others, as well as our own lives. When we offer kindness, we forge meaningful connections with others and improve the quality of our relationships.

Some ways to show kindness to others in the community, according to The Mental Health Foundation:

  • Volunteer for a local community organisation

  • Offer your expertise and support as a mentor for those who are struggling

  • Check-in safely with a neighbour

  • See if there’s anything you can do to support your children’s school or nursery – offer to read stories for example

  • Involve your friends and neighbours in community projects

  • Offer to skill-share with a friend - you could teach guitar, dance or a new recipe

  • Call a friend that you haven’t spoken to for a while

  • Tell a family member how much you love and appreciate them

  • Offer a listening ear to someone who simply wants to talk

There are many lovely community organizations where we can volunteer our time in order to help others. By giving back and providing service to others, this is an important way to show kindness and to help charitible causes. We can also meet like-minded people this way as well.

So today, for World Kindness Day, think about how you can show kindness to the people in your life. Whether it is in a big way or a small way, every act of kindness makes a difference in the way it ripples outwards.

Research has shown that people who witness kind acts are often motivated to perform a kind act themselves. A video showing an act of kindness towards a homeless man may well mean that a homeless man locally will get a good breakfast bought for him.
In this circumstance we can see a number of ripples starting to form. First of all, the person in the video receiving the gesture is likely to show kindness to the next person he comes in to contact with. What is interesting is research has shown that those witnessing the act are just as likely to show kindness to others too. This means those watching it on social media are likely to spread that kindness through sharing the video or going out to try and replicate that kind act. One simple act of kindness could affect hundreds if not thousands of people in the same way as an act of aggression or anger can do.

Each act of kindness can inspire countless more. This way, all the good that we do radiates outwards, and positively effects more and more people. It may not seem like much to do one kind thing for someone, but the cumulative positive impact of multiple acts of kindness can change the world.
