What is a Life Coach?

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Life coaches help people with life problems, similar to a therapist. However a key difference between a therapist and a life coach is that life coaching focuses on the future and what you hope to achieve, whereas therapy focuses on the past, and what caused the problems.

According to Very Well Mind,

Life coaches can help you clarify your goals, identify the obstacles holding you back, and then come up with strategies for overcoming each obstacle.

Different types of life coaches can help you focus on different areas of your life where you feel like you may not be excelling. Life coaches can help you work through limiting beliefs, set goals, live a more healthy lifestyle, help with relationships or with your finances.

When you are working with a life coach, you will typically have weekly sessions with work to complete on your own in between. The life coach will help you with your problems, and strategies to tackle them, but you have to do the work in your life on your own too.

It is important to find a life coach that you can build trust and rapport with, so that they can be someone you rely on with regards to sharing your problems. Being able to open up about your hopes, dreams and fears is important, so having a trusting relationship is key.

According to Better Up,

Sometimes, you come to a crossroads in life. It might come in the form of a quarter-life crisis or existential questioning. It might show up at the heels of a big career change or commitment. It might even present itself when you’ve already decided to start over in life — but you’re not sure where to go next.

Life coaches can help you when you are looking for a new direction in life and unsure where to go next. They can help you gain clarity about what you want to achieve by setting a mission, vision and goals. Then, they will help you work through concrete steps towards meeting your goals.

Setting Goals

When you work with a Life Coach, they will help you set goals using the SMART goals framework, so that you will have the best chance possible of meeting your goals.

SMART Goals stand for:

· Specific

· Measurable/ Meaningful

· Achievable/ As If Now

· Realistic

· Time bound

Using this popular goal-setting framework will help you set goals in such a way that you have the best possible chance of meeting them. The way you set your goals really matters, and being intentional and aligning them to the vision you have for your life can really help you to make your dreams come true.

As you work with your life coach, they will help you make progress towards your goals, teach you new strategies to use in your life to be more successful, and work on your mindset.

In the past, I have worked with a life coach, in a 12 week mindset coaching program. It was a great help for me to learn a lot of strategies to improve my mindset, simplify my life, and to be more intentional in what I was doing with my time.

The program that I went through was geared towards helping high-achieving Millennial women who were suffering from burnout. As I worked through the program, I was able to set new goals and find more direction in life.

After I went through the program, I wrote my ebook "Happy. Healthy. Rich." to document some of the process that I went through in changing my own life. I also currently offer my own coaching program based on my ebook.

Like many other coaches, I have a specific focus: on helping other women achieve happiness in life through mind, body and spirit wellness. I am a spiritual life coach, since I have an extensive background in spirituality, and I believe that any kind of personal growth ties back to spiritual growth.

Well-Rounded Wellness

As you begin to heal your body and mind, it is important to heal your spirit as well. This will keep you from feeling out of balance in any of the aspects in your life. There are several different domains in life that can be captured in the Wheel of Wellness. By making sure that you are tending to all of the domains of your life, you can make sure that your life is well rounded.

This helps you to keep from feeling like you are lacking in one area of your life, even if you may be excelling in other areas.

Working moms especially can feel like they struggle with balancing different aspects of their lives. This is due to balancing the demands of both career and family, as well as tending to their own needs. Often, moms will tend to neglect themselves in order to keep things running at home and at work.

This is why life coaching can help you refocus your priorities, and learn to take care of yourself in addition to your job and your family. You can do this by prioritizing self-care, and making time to work on things that matter to you in life. Being a well-rounded individual can help you do better with your kids and at work too.
